NIST researcher here, obviously a throwaway account.
About half our postdocs (all the federal scientists who came in through an extremely competitive fellowship) are on the chopping block, and a ton of really awesome staff scientists as well, some of whom have won awards for their work. We knew this was probably coming, but it’s still such a waste :(

This is horrifying. Across the board (NOAA, FDA, NIH, NSF, etc.), they are dismantling the entire pipeline of scientific research in the United States through these actions, nevermind the rumored 50 - 75% cuts expected in science agencies across the government. For what, short term profits for xAI and SpaceX? If I were an adversary of the US, I couldn't imagine a more effective way to damage their technological superiority than to convince themselves to completely neuter the pipeline of new scientists into the economy. What a shame.
Maybe it's to help the EU and China catch up /s
It seems very similar to how large, complacent businesses slash R&D, training, and employee compensation; then are surprised when they are left behind by their competitors.
Just ripping the copper out of the walls before burning the rest of the building down.
Why can't the journalists in all these DOGE firings articles tell us the denominator?
When the history of the Trump era is written, likely on a cave wall, the major media outlets will be high on the list of those held culpable. The "free press" has failed America, perhaps for the last time.
